The event consisted of artificial wall climbing, during which the able bodied participants and people with disabilities climbed the wall together while supporting and interacting with each other. Wall climbing is an increasingly popular sport and it is included as an Olympic sport. It is very similar to rock climbing, but since it is done in a controlled environment, it is considered to be much safer. Wall climbing can be done in special fitness centres equipped with indoor rock climbing walls with holds attached to them. Other equipment such as harnesses and helmets are often necessary to ensure safety. Facilities equipped with a wall for wall climbing usually have a number of certified climbing instructors. These instructors often have years of experience climbing and have undergone a rigorous certification program. They are there for the safety of the climbers as well as rock climbing instruction.
We met at Arun Samant Climbing Wall which is on the ground of Nandadeep School in Goregaon East. Firefox Riders and PWDs arrived at the venue at 6:45 am. Upon gathering, everyone was given orientation about the activity which included a basic introduction to wall climbing. Mr. Subodh Murkute and the team of instructors explained the safety features and showcased how to effectively climb the wall. It was a multi difficulty level wall with a Base - Midway ledge and the final summit. After filling up consent forms, riders and PWDs were prepared with safety equipment for the adventure activity. There were two ropes on the same side and one rope on the adjacent side of the wall which helped riders and PWDs do the climbing activity simultaneously. All the instructors were experienced wall climbers who had participated and won many laurels at different wall climbing competitions.
