Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation, in association with Firefox Bikes and Volunteer4India, organized an inclusive wall climbing event in Mumbai, as part of our #EverydayAbility series. During the event, able bodied people and Persons with Disability (PwDs) climbed an artificial wall together while supporting and interacting with each other. It was a multi-difficulty level wall with a base, midway ledge, and the final summit. Certain modifications were made such that even wheelchair users who were present could attempt the activity. Parallelly, there was 'Play for Peace' session, where people were introduced to inclusive and co-operative gaming to help them get to know each other and build a sense of community amongst the group.
The event consisted of artificial wall climbing, during which the able bodied participants and people with disabilities climbed the wall together while supporting and interacting with each other. Wall climbing is an increasingly popular sport. It is very similar to rock climbing, but since it is done in a controlled environment, it is considered to be much safer. Wall climbing can be done in special fitness centers equipped with indoor rock climbing walls with holds attached to them. Other equipment such as harnesses and helmets are often necessary to ensure safety. Facilities equipped with a wall for wall climbing usually have a number of certified climbing instructors. These instructors often have years of experience climbing and have undergone a rigorous certification program. They are there for the safety of the climbers as well as rock climbing instruction. Parallelly, there was a ‘Play for Peace’ session, where people were introduced to Inclusive and Co-operative Gaming; to help them lower their inhibitions, get to know each other and build a sense of community amongst the group.
